2、evelopment of Sherford,a new town in Devon.A digger uncovered the cave system in which more than 200 clusters of bones have since been found.Archaeologists believe that the remains date back to the most recent Ice Age about 30,000 to 60,000 years ago.Duncan Wilson is the Chief Executive of Historic

3、England.He said,“This discovery is exceptional.To have found partial remains of such a range of species here in Devon gives us a brilliant insight into the animals which roamed around Ice Age Britain thousands of years ago.”Found in the cave were the partial remains of a woolly mammoth,including a t

4、usk and a tooth.A mammoths tusk could grow up to a whopping four metres long!Parts of the skull and the lower jaw of a woolly rhinoceros were also discovered.Archaeologists were also amazed to find an almost complete wolf skeleton!If that wasnt enough,they also found the remains of a hyena,horse,rei

5、ndeer and red fox.Rob Bourn was the lead archaeologist who uncovered the Ice Age beasties.He said that the find“is a rare and special occurrence.”Archaeologists are uncertain how all the animals ended up in the cave.They suggest it could be that the animals fell into a pit and were unable to escape.

6、Another possible reason is that they died somewhere else and their bones were washed into the area.The excavation of the animal remains has been completed and they will now be cleaned and studied in detail.They will then be put on display not far from the cave at Plymouths museum The Box.Illustratio
