1、Visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie has now met with his U.S. counterpart Leon Panetta as part of his on-going trip to the US.CRIs Wei Tong has more.The meeting between Liang and Panetta is considered one of the main highlights of Liangs U.S. tour, the first by a Chinese defense ministe

2、r in some nine years.Liang has told Panetta he believes mutual trust is the essential building block of how great powers get along.Building a new type of cooperative and win-win military relations based on equality and mutual benefit is the guiding principle in furthering China-US ties. We need to e

3、radicate the mindset of military confrontation between power nations and deepen mutual trust.Liang Guanglie has told Panetta the two sides try to settle their differences through consultation.As such, Liang has extended an invitation for Panetta to visit China later on this year.For his part, Panett

4、a says he believes the relationship between the two militaries has the potential to expand.The United States and China have already worked together in a variety of areas. We are expanding our cooperation particularly in areas such as peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and coun

5、ter piracy. China has ably conducted maritime operations in the Gulf of Aden for more than three years. And these operations have helped to secure the free flow of commerce in vital sea lanes from the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean.Panetta also notes both sides have a role to play in regional security

6、in the Pacific.The United States Department of Defense recently released a new defense strategy, recognizing that no region is more important than the Asia-Pacific for a countrys future peace and prosperity. Our goal is to enhance our cooperation throughout the region, to enhance our cooperation wit

7、h China so that we can promote peace and stability in the region. We recognize that the US and China will not agree on every issue. But we believe our military-to-military dialogue is critical to ensuring that we will avoid dangerous misunderstandings and misperceptions that could lead to crisis.Mea

8、nwhile, a sideline of the tour also has taken Liang Guanglie to visit to the families of the Flying Tigers.The Flying Tigers were an American air squadron who flew on the side of the Chinese during the fight against the Japanese during World War II.During his 9-day US tour, Liang is also due to visit a number of strategic US military sites.For CRI, this is Wei Tong.
