、of people living alone has skyrocketed (猛涨). What is driving the phenomenon? Human societies, at all times and places, have organized themselves in groups but not any more. Numbers never tell the whole story, but in this case they are shocking. According to the market-research firm Euromonitor Inter

、national, the number of people living alone rose from about 153 million in 1996 to 277 million in 2022 a 55% increase in 15 years. Contemporary solo dwellers (独居的人) in the US are primarily women: about 18 million, compared with 14 million men. The majority, more than 16 million, are middle-aged adul

、ts between the ages of 35 and 64. The elderly account for about 11 million of the total. Solitary (独居的) young adults between 18 and 34 account for more than 5 million, compared with 500,000 in 1950, making them the fastest-growing part of this population. Sweden has more solo dwellers than anywhere

、else in the world, with 47% of households having only one resident, followed by Norway at 40%. So what is driving this? One reason that more people live alone is that they can afford to. Yet there are a great many things that we can afford to do but choose not to, which means the economic explanatio

、n is just one piece of the puzzle. The cultural change that Emile Durkheim called the cult (崇拜) of the individual may also be a reason, and seems now to have gone far beyond what Durkheim expected. Another driving force is surely the communications revolution, which has allowed people to experience

、the pleasures of social life even when theyre living alone. Living alone is often thought to be environmentally unsustainable, but solos tend to live in apartments rather than in big houses, and in relatively green cities rather than in car-dependent suburbs. Theres good reason to believe that peopl

、e who live alone in cities consume less energy than they would if they coupled up and decamped (移居) to a single-family home. Finally, its too early to say how any particular society will respond to either the problems or the opportunities created by this extraordinary social transformation. After al

、pier than those living with family. ( C ) The traditional distinction between products that satisfy needs and those that satisfy wants is no longer adequate to describe classes of products. In todays prosperous societies, the distinction has become unclear because so many wants have been turned into

、 needs. A writer, for instance, can work with paper and pencils. These are legal needs for the task. But the work can be done more quickly and efficiently with a word processor. Thus a computer is soon viewed as a need rather than a want. In the field of marketing, consumer goods are classed accordi

、ng to the way in which they are purchased. The two main classes are convenience goods and shopping goods. Two lesser types are specialty goods and unsought(主动提供的) goods. It must be emphasized that all of these types are based on the way shoppers think about products, not on the nature of the product

、s themselves. What is regarded as a convenience item in France (wine, for example) should be a specialty goods in the United States. People do not spend a great deal of time shopping for such convenience items as groceries, newspapers, toothpaste, aspirin, and candy. The buying of convenience goods

、may be done routinely, as some families buy groceries once a week. Such regularly purchased items are called staples. Sometimes convenience products are bought without enough thinking; someone has a sudden desire for an ice cream sundae(圣代) on a hot day. Or they may be purchased as emergency items.

、Shopping goods are items for which customers search. They compare prices, quality, and styles, and may visit a number of stores before making a decision. Buying an automobile is often done this way. Shopping goods fall into two classes; those that are recognized as basically the same and those that

、are regarded as different. Items that are looked upon as basically the same include such things as home appliances, television sets, and automobiles. Having decided on the model desired, the customer is primarily interested in getting the item at the most favorable price. Items regarded as essential

、ly different include clothing, furniture, and dishes. Quality, style and fashion will either take precedence(优先) over price, or they will not matter at all.99. It can be learned from the first paragraph that _. A. a writer needs a word processor B. needs and wants cant be separated clearly C. the wa

、y to distinguish the products is unimportant D. a computer is a need rather than a want 100.The example of wine is used to illustrate that _. A. goods are classified differently in different countries B. the types of the product lie on the people rather than its nature C. Frenchmen often drink but A

、mericans sometimes do D. one product may belong to many types 101. Staples are items that _. A. are convenient to purchase B. are purchased without enough thinking C. people “want but dont need” D. people are in constant need of 102. Shopping goods that are considered as basically the same are those

、 that _. A. consumers dont care where to buy them B. consumers spend much time searching for C. satisfy similar needs of the consumer D. can be found in nearly every shop Section C (8)Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible

、words. Have you ever had a wonderful idea and thought it would make a great invention, but didnt know what to do next? Here is the next step to take to make your dream come true and become a famous inventor. Remember to dream big, and never count anything out. The first thing to do is to do some res

、earch. If you find nobody else has invented it on the Internet, search through US patent (专利) information to see if a patent has ever been created for your type of invention. If not, go to the next step. The easiest way to go is to work with a company that can help you to make your dreams a reality.

、 It can help you present your ideas and get your product in the right hands. Look for a reputable (有声望的) company such as Lambert and Lambert in Minnesota. It offers free advice, and if it thinks your product is marketable, it will help you push it. Call the company and make an appointment. You will
