    4、mer and the start of the new year?We put these questions to fellow Twinkl colleagues who work in six different countries:Argentina,Chile,France,Germany,South Africa and the USA.We asked them how long their school holidays are,what happens during the last week of term and what happens on the first da

    5、y back.Among other things,youll find out how,in the southern hemisphere,the summer holidays are at the same time as Christmas.Whats more,youll learn about why children get Schultte in Germany and how the first day back at school is marked.With each article,theres a fun activity for you to complete.W

    7、ttle bit strange in comparison to most of the countries around the world.Classes start in February and they finish in December.We have a winter break by the end of July(two weeks).January and half of February are our summer holidays and they mark the beginning of a new school year.Schools usually ha

    8、ve a celebration on the last day.In some cases,families are invited to schools to share this with their children”.“Summer holidays last six to eight weeks in general and the winter break lasts two weeks.Some schools may have a one-week spring break as well.Summer holidays start the second or third w

    9、eek in December,and they finish in the second or third week in February.Winter break starts in mid-July.”“Schools usually have a celebration on the first day of school.Theres a more formal part in which a speaker welcomes the kids and their families,we sing the national anthem and we raise the flag.

    14、uding Paragraphs This is one of the most important parts of the whole article.The better your ending,the better your reader will think the whole article is.It can be quite common to end on a quote.If someone else has said it better,use their words.The ending can also be a question or just a bit more

    20、the end of the term,before the last day,schools will have a summer festival where parents can come along and cakes are sold,dances are performed and the children usually sing together in performance.They sometimes also have a display of their work for parents to walk around and see and there are gam

    21、es to be played typical of what you would find at a summer fete in the UK.The last day of school usually ends early and children just clear out all their things,maybe watch a movie,play some games and then head home.Often,there will be a school assembly where the headteacher will say a few kind word

    22、s before the break.”“Germany is divided into different states.These states have slightly different holiday times.One state,North Rhine Westphalia,finishes at the end of June;whereas another Bavaria finishes around the end of July.The holiday lasts six weeks.”“When a child goes to school for the very

    23、 first time,parents sometimes give children Schultten.These are colourful paper cones filled with sweets and presents.The presents are normally something useful for school,like stationery.In many schools in Germany,the first day is not an actual school day and is a day where children get used to the

    26、econd and third week of July.”“At the end of the school year in all schools,there is an award ceremony where children are honoured for various things,such as grades,good behaviour and punctuality.At this ceremony,they are given a diploma.Each class also presents an art show which is usually a group

    27、dance.Also at the end of the year,each year group has a day out,where they usually go to a recreational centre with their families,classmates and head teacher.On this outing,there is a shared lunch and in many places,parents organise to give a gift to each child in the class.Santa Claus also sometim

    28、es arrives at the pool party to hand out presents to the little ones.Because the end of the year holidays coincides with the Christmas season,which is also in summer.“The school year runs from March to December.The summer holidays are approximately 11 weeks,from the second week of December to the fi
