But the “here” referenced in his text wasnt Morehouse; it was Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was there for a ten-week summer internship.Why? Whats wrong? I texted

    3、back.Im frustrated Im wasting my time here.I wrote back. Lets talk about it.But he responded, Its gonna have to wait till later.I remember how helpless I felt as I ended the exchange. Okay. Keep the faith, son. Things happen for a reason.From previous conversations, I fully understood his angst. Aar

    4、ons experiments exploring the connection between fructose and hypertension werent going well. He couldnt figure out what he was doing wrong. His repeated requests for in-house assistance left him feeling incompetent and further confused. His feelings of isolation and his inability to bond with the o

    5、ther research students compounded the already precarious state of his emotions.Plus, I suspected a recent encounter at a science conference had chipped away at my sons self-esteem. A couple of attendees implied that students from historically black colleges and universities (HBCSs), like my son, wer

    6、e not as intellectually gifted as those who attended other institutions of higher learning. The emotion I heard in Aarons voice every time he mentioned the incident suggested the instigators had succeeded in making him doubt his ability and his academic choices.When my son finally called, I did my b

    7、est to encourage and reassure him. I reminded him of his proven capabilities and past achievements. Hed scored in the 95th percentile on the ACT. Hed been named a National Achievement Finalist. Hed been offered scholarships at a variety of colleges and universities. He was at Morehouse College on a

    8、full academic scholarship. The Case research coordinators wouldnt have selected him if they thought he was incapable of doing the work.I even offered suggestions for coping with the situation meet privately with the professor in charge, do the same with the administrator who recommended you to the p

    9、rogram, solicit advice from friends with research experience at other programs, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and try to exercise.But what I didnt do was suggest he leave the program. Instead, I said, “You know you cant quit, dont you?” His silence indicated that wasnt what he wanted to hear.

    10、Nonetheless, I continued, “Because if you do, youll always wonder what might have happened had you stayed. Besides, sometimes its better to be dismissed than to give up on yourself.”Later, while second-guessing my response, I gave in and said he could leave the program if the situation didnt improve

    11、. But when I spoke with my seventy-five-year-old mother about her grandsons struggles, she instructed sternly, “Do not let him come home!” Furthermore, she said as soon as our phone call ended, she was contacting her morning walking partner so they could go into full prayer-warrior mode. She vowed t

    12、o do the same with the ladies in her Christian fellowship group.As amused as I was by my mothers impassioned church-lady response, I, too, am a firm believer in the power of prayer. My husband and I both sent up daily prayers on our only childs behalf, but with the understanding that the outcome goo

    13、d or bad was one we would have to accept.In Aarons case, not only did his experiments continue to fail, but a series of additional bad breaks and setbacks transpired. One morning, while making breakfast, he inadvertently set off the fire alarm, which drew the fire department and led to his dorms eva

    14、cuation. His plans to shadow a local emergency room doctor vanished in a never-ending shuffle of administrative paperwork. A black male medical student from whom hed hope to seek advice all but ignored him. And just when we all thought it couldnt get any worse, Aarons efforts to relax and stay fit l

    15、ed to him hyper-extending his knee during a pickup game of basketball.It pained me, not only to watch my child fail, but to witness him do so in such a devastating and spectacular fashion. Deep down, though, I knew learning how to gracefully accept a catastrophic outcome was an experience he needed.

    16、 Any attempt by me to assist in his rescue would only impede his growth and maturity. His life wasnt in any real danger, I reminded myself repeatedly. He wasnt being harassed or discriminated against. And the internship, not to mention his suffering, would be over by summers end.Aaron informed us th

    17、at his lack of lab results meant he would have no research findings to exhibit on presentation day. He would also likely have to forfeit the programs final paycheck. Resigned to such an outcome, I began focusing on how to help my son manage his disappointment and care for his bruised ego upon his re

    18、turn home. So imagine my shock and disbelief when I received a text message on July 13th accompanied by several crying emojis that read: THE EXPERIMENT WORKED!It turned out that my sons failures in the lab were due, in large part, to a bad chemical reagent. Once the error was discovered and correcte

    19、d, everything took a turn for the better. Not only did he present his findings at Case upon his return to Morehouse in the fall, but my son and another Morehouse student were selected to present their research projects at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. More recently, the s

    20、ame summer research landed him an invite to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS 2017) that was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Last but not least, theres been talk that the work might be published in a science-related academic journal.In the end, my son experienced a vi

    21、ctory that no one privy to his situation could have ever predicted. It was a victory that, in my opinion, can best be described as miraculous. What I most hope he takes away from the experience is a greater appreciation for the power of patience, persistence and prayer. I think what my son and I bot

    22、h learned is that sometimes, just on the other side of what youre convinced is a total and complete failure, is actually a win so stunning and bright that you have no choice but to bow your head in acknowledgment and appreciation.
