A new study of nearly 50 species of monkeys and lemurs(狐猴) has found that they spend more and more time on the ground.The study was led by Timo

At the time, no one had studied that species, but other bamboo lemurs were known to spend most of their time in trees, feeding on bamboo leaves. The forest where he researched, however, was degraded
19、 and had less and less bamboo. These lemurs are now spending around half their waking hours at ground level. Then Eppley examined more data observed on 32 monkey species and 15 lemur species at 68 sites. He found that some primates, including howler monkeys and bamboo lemurs, are spending more time
20、on the ground in areas where their forest is degraded and destroyed.Although moving to the ground has some advantages in certain situations, primates can face problems when they leave the trees. They can become victims of new predators(捕食性动物) and some diseases. Sometimes they may go to the ground to
21、 seek food or mates. They also need to cross open areas without any trees.Some species are more likely to increase the amount of time they spend out of the trees when forests are reduced and temperatures increase. Those that are flexible enough to adapt because of their diverse diets or large groups
22、 may be OK for a while, but its extremely dangerous for others to move to the ground because predators and diseases can create a terrible situation for them. Other species relying on fruit or living in small groups are less adaptable and are less willing to leave the trees.“Primates are important se
23、ed spreaders within their forest habitats and are vital for the growth of some tree species. Losing any of these primate species will degrade the forest ecosystem,” Eppley says. “Regardless of whether a primate species has specific characters, we will still need to carry out fast and effective conse
