、girls are meeting with.“Girls are facing prejudice from boys, from some parents, and even from each other. We have made a lot of progress in gender equality but we still have a long way to go,” said Richard Weissbourd, who conducted this study. The prejudice could hold girls back from succeeding. The

、 study of 20,000 students showed only 8% of girls preferred female political leaders. Many tend to believe males have always led, so they have a preference for their leading, which becomes one of their habits. Whats more surprising is that although some mothers appear to be prejudiced, they hold the

、 idea that school councils should be led by boys.Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out, says these findings are amazing, but shes not really surprised by them. “Even today weve given girls every opportunity but our attitudes should be changed,” Simmons said. Simmons offers ways for parents to help

、break these patterns of gender prejudice: Research shows that chores are usually distributed in really gendered ways. That means we tend to tell boys to mow the lawn and girls to do the dishes. Change it up at home. Thats a big thing parents can do. Let boys do something like babysitting because att

、 leadersD. Advice to those who have prejudice about girlsCRecently I posted “What do you wish your parents had said to you?” on my Facebook Page. I got many thoughtful and heartfelt responses. Why did I ask this particular question? Because in my experience as a psychologist, I have found that people

、 are naturally far more able to think about and describe what they wish their parents had not done or said to them than what they wish their parents had done or said to them. This distinction is also a fair description of the difference between abuse and neglect. Abuse is an action, while neglect is

、a lack of action. Our brains record and remember things that happened (like abuse), while our brains do not notice things that do not happen (like neglect).Which seems worse, a parent who screams and yells at a child, or a parent who simply does no talk to the child at all?I have seen that failure t

、o notice a child does just as much damage to him or her as abuse , but the effects are different. An abused child will feel “hit” verbally, physically or emotionally, while a neglected child will feel simply “at sea”, invalid and alone.I see Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN) as one of the greatest p

、otential threats to future generations. It is difficult to stop something that is invisible, unnoticeable and unmemorable. Many adults who grew up with an absence of emotionally attentive observations do not recognize the damage that this absence has done to them. And even when they recognize it, th

It seems difficult to understand until you see it day after day, in your office, as I have.A couple of the reviewers of my book, Running on Empty, have s

、aid that the recovery chapters are unrealistic because they are about helping readers give themselves what they have never got. But I know that people with CEN can make great progress toward this. It requires effort and motivation, but it is very much possible. I know this because I have watched it

、happen many times. All of the emotionally neglected people who offered requests in response to my question hold a secret key- a key to meeting their own needs, a key that offers healing, comfort and fuel. How to give yourself what you never got:If your parents did not talk to you, then talk more to yo

、urself. Put yourself in situations where you will be required to talk.If your parents never told you that you were good enough, then you must deal with this question for yourself. 52、what you say. Always speak the truth, no matter how difficult it may be.If your parents never asked you if you were okay, then you must ask yourself this often, and listen carefully to your answer. If your parents did not notice when you were upset, then you must try to always notice what you are fee

、ling and why.And so on and so on, the answer lies within you. The key is self-awareness. Because once you know what you did not get, you know what you need. And when you know what you need, you can figure out how to get it. And then you will have it to give to your own children.61. The phenomenon de

、 to notice their own feeling.DOver the years, my girls have encountered a number of group play situations- some formal and others decidedly less formal. Formal playgroups tend to have rules on the topic of sharing. However, at one weekly toddler playdate organized by the local Montessoris school, no

、-sharing was the norm. Children were allowed to play with a book or a toy until they finished with it. And other children (and their parents) were expected to respect that. At another playdate, a timer was set whenever one child decided that he wanted to play with a toy that another child was playin

、g with. When the timer went off, it was time to share.Things are different when it comes to backyard playdates and it depends entirely on the rules of sharing determined by the parents in attendance. Some parents force their kids to share the toys when another child shows interest in them and they e

、xpect other parents to do the same. Others attempt to negotiate between kids to come up with alternatives or compromised playtime with the desired toy. Basically, it boils down to this unspoken rule. If other parents are making their kids share, youd better make your kid shared too, or its likely th

、at you will not be invited for future playdates. However, a new viewpoint from some experts has been put forward that sharing is actually bad for a childs development. The idea is that kids dont actually learn to share, but they just learn to obey the demands of more powerful individuals- namely, the

、ir parents. And sharing teaches kids that they should be allowed to have anything just because they want it. In addition, sharing disrupts a childs focused attention and his ability to concentrate. So, if a child focuses on a toy, he should be allowed to play with it until he has figured out whatever

、 he wanted to learn from that toy or has brought whatever imaginative play he was going on to a conclusion. For some kids, the span of attention may last for five minutes, while for others it may be five hours. On the one hand, its OK for kids to learn that they cant have everything the moment they

、want it. They learn they may have to be patient and wait or move on to something else.On the other hand, its also OK for kids to learn how to share. As an adult, I share things with my friends and family all the time. We borrow our neighbours electric hedge clippers whenever we need them, and our ne

Over the years I can think of dozens of things that I have borrowed from others-a laptop computer when mine died suddenly in the middle of a busy week, a steam cleaner for the carpet, books, cars and clothes. The lis

I like to live in a world where I can share with friends and family as needed, and its OK for my kids to learn how to do the same.Sharing doesnt mean dropping the toy you are playing with instantly and handing it over to another. It could mean offering it to a friend who may not ge
