The name dates from the time of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (AD 420589). Brushes and ink are two of
28、the well-known “Four Treasures of the Study” tools of Chinese calligraphers, painters and poets over thousands of years. The other two are the rice paper(宣纸), and the inkstone for grinding(磨)the hard inksticks. The traditional brush can be traced back to the late period of the Stone Age, but became
29、recognised during the Warring States Period (476221 BC). It was improved by Meng Tian, a general of the Qin Dynasty (221206 BC). Brushes are made of animal hair, usually attached to a bamboo stick. Various kinds of animal hair were once used, each having certain characteristics. They can be classifi
30、ed by their size: large, medium and small; and also by the strength: soft (usually taken from goats), medium (taken from rabbits, or a mixture of goat and weasel(黄鼠狼)hair) and hard or stiff (taken from weasel tails). Hair of different animals can be combined to create different qualities. The ink is
31、 commonly made by burning pine or another wood in an earthenware(陶制的)container, mixing thick ash with glue, and pressing it into an ink stick, or another form for easier transport and preservation. An unusual old piece of ink is shaped like a ruyi, which conveys wishes for happiness and good fortune
32、. After shaping, it takes about two years for the ink to dry, in a totally dry and dark environment. Paper is usually made from parts of the rice plant, like rice straw or rice flour. The paper in the old days is very thin and light. Thus it can adsorb ink easily. An inkstone is accurately a stone m
