17、 to our environment. Now, thanks to a revolutionary self-healing 3-D printed rubber material, cracked shoe soles may be a thing of the past. The magical polymer(聚合物,多聚体)is the brainchild of researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Connecticut (UConn). The team,
18、 led by USC Assistant Professor Qiming Wang, created it through a process called photopolymerization(光聚合作用),which uses light to solidify the liquid used to create 3-D printed plastic. The researchers found that adding the right proportion of oxidant(氧化剂)to the liquid allowed the 3-D polymer to heal
19、without slowing down the hardening process.“When we gradually increase the oxidant, the self-healing behavior becomes stronger, but the photopolymerization behavior becomes weaker, “explained Wang. There is competition between these two behaviors. And eventually, we found the ratio that can enable b
20、oth high self-healing and relatively rapid photopolymerization.” The team, who published their findings in the journal NPG Asia Materials on February 1st, 2019, state that the repair time can be reduced by increasing the room temperature. “If you just put a broken shoe on a bench at room temperature
21、,the rubber will heal itself in six to eight hours,” Wang said. “If you apply heat, at maybe 60,that accelerates the healing process to about two hours.Given the materials tremendous potential, it is not surprising to hear that Wang and his team have been approached by several shoe manufacturers(制造商
22、)eager to be the first to use the technology, which is still in the early stages. Once perfected, the scientists also hope to apply the technique to hard plastics that can be used to create self-healing toys, electronics, vehicle parts, and, if Wang has his way, even tires.1.How do the researchers m

But scientists have now discovered a shelter to which one regions reefs might relocatevia oceanic currents when corals are still in their free-floating larval (幼虫状态的)stageto escape overheating. Researchers found that during periods
27、 of warming in the distant past, coral reefs migrated away from their warmer home to more comfortable subtropical (亚热带的)areas around Daya Bay, just northeast of Hong Kong in the South China Sea.Tara Clark, a scientist in Australia, led a group of scientists on an exploration to Daya Bay in 2015. The

By studying fossils record there, they find the ancient reefs grew between 6,850 and 5 ,510 years ago, which is also the time when ocean temperatures around South China and nearby seas were two degrees Celsius warmer on ave

This trend indicates that some of todays reefs may be able to set up a new home in places such as Daya Bay.“Its absolutely fundamental to understanding the movement of coral reefs and their responses to ecological change”, says John Pandolfi, a scientist at the University o

Such adaptation often occurs on broader timescales than those of humans, and the fossil record can reveal that long-tern change.Although the fossil evidence suggests that Daya Bay could one day provide a refuge for corals, there are some barriers in the way of making the refuge an invi

But in light of the new discovery, Clark says, “we might as well do the best we can to protect the areas like Day
