3、ving Glasgow for the States! ” Her thick Scottish English and sense of humor were obvious right away. I was not in the US any more, where customs agents never joke around. As I settled in at the university, I could feel myself getting used to hearingand even speakingthe Scottish English of my custom
4、s agent. In classroom discussions, people would say “em” when they couldnt think of what to say instead of “um”, which was great fun. After the first few weeks, I stopped chuckling about this. Strathclyde students stayed up late into the night, running around campus and shouting, “Go! Lets go, lets
5、go, lets go curse word Glasgow! ” Pretty soon, I was no longer saying “thanks” at the supermarket instead, I said “cheers”. My Scottish friends drank whiskey and ate haggis(羊杂碎布丁). I drank plenty of whiskey but felt ashamed to admit that I wasnt brave enough to try haggis. Scottish bakeries usually
6、sell bridies (肉馅饼). Add a cup of teathough I usually Americanized it by choosing coffee insteadand a bridie makes for a delicious breakfast. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with
14、no regard for anyone elses opinion. However, it is true that the styles invented by young English people are much more eccentric than any other nations street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and we appreciate origina
15、lity in dress even if we do not individually have it. Another “rule” of behavior I had discovered was that it is very important for the English not to take themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. However, it is well known that most teenagers tend to take themselves a bit too ser
16、iously. The Goths, in their scaring black costumes, certainly look as if they are taking themselves seriously. But when I got into conversation with them, I discovered that they too had a sense of humor. I was once chatting to a Goth in the full vampire costumewith a white face, deep purple lipstick
17、, and black parrot-hair. I saw he was also wearing a T-shirt with “Goth”. “Why are you wearing that? ” I asked. “Its in case you dont realize Im a Goth, ” he answered, pretending to be serious.
