33、he table number and the kind of rhyme these syllables have. Along the top row are six articulation categories for consonants. And down the side, the four tones. Though the interpretation is debated, confident scholars spent centuries sounding out ancient Chinese syllables and teaching that Chinese h

34、ad exactly 36 initial consonants.But Chen Lis not convinced. Hes combing through old fanqie and his research revealed flaws. There werent 36 initials. There were 41. Five of them needed to be split in two. But theres more: the sounds in the rime tables are not the sounds in the Qieyun. Later researc

35、h will go on to show that even the earlier stage itself is complicated. Its a compromise between ancient literary dialects. All this hard work merely left us with categories.In the early 1900s, a Swede, Karlgren, traveled to China and added an important piece. He filled out the rime categories with

Its open to students from all classes, and I hope a lot of you will decide to take part.You must call your story Winter, but you can deal with the topic in any way that you like. Last year, we also had a simila

100、r competition and the title then was Spring. We had some interesting and original entries.Now I must tell you about the dates. Its the first of March now, and we would like your stories by the end of May. We then promise to read all the entries and give you the results before the end of June.You sho

101、uld place emphasis on the length. Your stories are not too long. A maximum of 500 words, please. Thats longer than last years, which was a maximum of 350 words. We wont read any stories that go above the limit.Finally, the prizes! There will be a winner from each age group and each winner will receive tickets for this summers music festival. Last years winners won tickets to the theater and had a wonderful evening at the musical Cats.
