When he was 12 years old, his parents were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously injured. To make ends meet, they lived on welfare. Donaldson sa
4、ys, “There were holes in my shoes and clothes. When youre teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus on making money for himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of insignificance. However, its easy t
5、o overlook others along the way. I was the guy that would see a homeless person and cross the street, so I didnt have to confront (面对) him. My focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.”Donaldson returned home from India with a different thought. He traveled t
6、o eight cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless.“My heart broke,” he says. “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”Inspired by Mother Teresas words and the stories hed heard across America, Donaldson loaded up a pickup truck with $300 worth of groc
7、eries and handed them out to anyone who needed help. In 1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization, Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world. Heres how it works:A source of Xrays moves around the body, sending a beam (波束) of radiation through the bone, blood and tissue, while moving detectors meas
14、ure the beam that makes it through.Different materials in the body absorb Xrays differently. The calcium (钙) in the bone actively absorbs Xrays, for example, while soft tissues absorb less. So when the data collected by the detectors are joined together by a computer, it can form a cross sectional v
15、iew of whats inside based on where Xrays are absorbed more or less.Moving the table holding the patient so that the Xray beam and detectors slide along the body enables 3D reconstructions of organs and other parts.Over the years, scientists have continually improved the technology, making it faster
16、and have higher resolution (清晰度), and cutting the amount of radiation that patients receive. These improved CT scans have painted ever more detailed landscapes of the human body.
