I wanted the
14、 people in my new home to think I was polite. However, I soon learned that it wasnt that simple. Early on, I noticed that people seemed confused(困惑的) by me saying “xiexie”, as if it wasnt necessary or normal. They looked in the same way to my use of “qing” and the way I would soften my requests, as

My Chinese friends told me that using “please” actually had the opposite(相反的) effect of pol

But this makes things difficult for those with British manners, as saying “please” and “thank you” is something we learn from a very young age. Deborah Fallows described the way a Westerner sees China as a strange mixture(混合) of politeness and
17、rudeness in The Atlantic: “A person will pour tea or beer for everyone else before even considering pouring his own. But then another will announce Gei wo yan!, that is, Give me salt!, with no sign of a please or thank you involved.” A good example of something that confuses foreigners in China is s

Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think
27、 books do it better.I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other peoples point of view, and understand other peoples decisions or opinions. With a book, you

Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone
