7、r, the city Angkor became a holy place of importance throughout Southeast Asia. Taken over by the Thais in 1431 and deserted in 1432, Angkor was forgotten for a few centuries. Travelling Buddhist monks came upon the remains. Recognising the holy nature of the temples but not knowing why they were bu
8、ilt, theymade up stories about the remains. In the stories, the temples had been built by the gods in a far ancient time. Most people believed the stories to be nothing more than legend until the French explorer Henri Mouhot brought Angkor to the worlds attention in I860. The French people loved the
