This idea never gained a big following in America. Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing,

    2、though there are no official numbers. Charles Deacon, Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. estimates that in the current first-year class of 1, 600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off. He says this number has not changed much over the years. Mr Deacon says

    3、the most common reason for taking a “gap year” is to have a chance to travel, but he says international students may take a“gap year”to meet requirements at home for military duty. Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education, but it can a

    4、lso give students a chance to explore their interests. Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital. Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow e

    5、motionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy. The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its website called “Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation. ”It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experience outside the pressure of st

    6、udies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time. Of course, a“gap year”is not for everyone; students might miss their friends who go on directly to college. And parents might worry that their children wil

    7、l decide not to go to college once they take time off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly. Holly Bulls job is to specialize in helping students plan their“gap year”. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with me

    18、ce was heavy in the house, and even Jet was quiet. Mols had thought about it from a hundred different angles, asked herself the question in a thousand different ways. She tried to be strong about a new page turning in her life. And she told herself that she was cool, she was well-liked at school and

    19、 she would make new friends. She knew what it would do to her mum if she didnt go. She thought about how they had been together longer than anyone in her family, longer than her mum and dad. When things went wrong, Carol always knew the right thing to say and to cook. They had fun together talking a

    20、bout her friends at school and the stupid things they would do or say. And Carol liked to keep up with the gossip about boys and who was doing what with who and where. Downstairs, inside. Mols knew if she said she wanted to stay with her dad that it would cut Carol. But in her heart, when she asked

    21、herself the question “Do you want to move to keep your family together? ”and she knew she couldnt leave Jaz and her dad. Bryce needed the car, so Mols and Carol caught the bus to Manly. It had rained all night. Heavy, straight-down rain, but the skies had cleared just as they walked towards the beac

    22、h. Mols knew today was the day; she was going to have to say one way or another. Mols wanted to think about something else. She tried to remember the last time her mum had called her Poppet. It was her name when she was little. It carried with it all the warmth and gentleness and strength of her mum

    23、. And then there was another time. She and Jaz found an old wooden box under her place. It was about half the size of a shoebox and made of rough wood.
